Student Blog Analysis

The Opening Titles of Seven – FILMdetail

As part of an AICE Media assignment, we analyzed another students blog from another high school in Florida. For reference, here is the blog I chose to analyze: movie-opener-brainstorming-research.html

In this blog, the student analyzed nine different opening film sequences and dove deeper into the text used, sound and lighting effects, and the misc-en-scene pursued by each film. Each different film such as OFFLINE  and Dare to Thrill had their own unique factors through camera shots and inducing feels set up the rest of the film.

The film OFFLINE was a drama released in 2012 centered around a recently released prisoner and his attempt to build back his life. The student described the typewriter like introduction and title sequence of the film and how it created the suspenseful meaning in the rest of it. It is interesting to see the effects that certain fonts and the way the title sequence is delivered on movie and what the audience feels. There were also contrasting scenes between two different girls building up the tension in the opening sequence, something I have noticed in the different openings that I analyzed in class.

Truth or Dare or Dare to Thrill is a horror/thrill film released in 2018, and its sequel in 2020. The student explained the camera shots used to increase the intensity and energy deriving from the opening sequence. The student described the close up shots used while closing in on the buttons of a doll in comparison to the kids, keeping up with the horror genre the film is in. The director also used different methods to filming such as the shaking of the camera allowing the audience to feel like they themselves are in the setting of the film.

After reading this blog, I feel more confident in my ability to analyze opening sequences more in depth by focusing on certain features such as camera shots, the setting, and texts and fonts used. It is still rather astonishing to see how all of the films produced today, all of the films we go to the big screen to see, can be analyzed in several different ways we are learning each day.
